Who We Are & How We Got Started

Alpha Children's Home is an orphanage located in Guyana, South America. As a registered charity, we were established for the care and nurturing of orphans and vulnerable children. We provide a home environment where children feel accepted, loved and secure. We target boys and girls ages four to twelve regardless of race or religious background. We were founded in March 1991 by Lucius and Esther Bruyning in the quaint town of New Amsterdam where we still stand today. Our vision is to establish a home for orphans and disadvantaged and vulnerable children . Over the past twenty-two years , with the help of generous and kind hearted people from all walks of life, scores of boys and girls have been blessed with true love that gave them shelter, good nutrition, schooling and godly training. We were born in their hearts through our passionate search to find a way to offer hope to children who took to the streets in effort to survive the hazards of extreme poverty and parental loss or abandonment. As we shared the good news of God's love among the people across our nation, we were arrested by the plight of children begging and sleeping on the streets and exposed to all kinds of abuse. For us this presented a challenge to trust God's faithfulness to provide them shelter, food, clothing and the basic needs of a growing child. Friends from the UK responded to our cry for help, and soon we were able to secure and refurbish an abandoned house which we made into a home for boys and girls.

Our Management

Lucius and Esther Bruyning are the Founders of Alpha Children's Home. Esther Bruyning has been the President and CEO since 1991 and is a Graduate of the Full Gospel Fellowship Bible Theological Seminary Guyana South America since 1978. She held position as the coordinator of the Lydia Intercessory Fellowship for Guyana, Suriname, and French Guyana. She also holds position as Pastor and Administrator of World Harvest Missions, New Amsterdam, Guyana, South America. She is actively involved in speaking out on the rights of a child and women in community. We are managed by a board of five under the leadership of Esther Bruyning. The daily challenge is for adequate finance for bills and the maintenance of the home. Currently, the fastest and most efficient way to send money to us is to send money via Money Gram through to the Bank of Nova Scotia. At present the building is being extended to provide accommodation for ten more children.

Where We Are Now

Currently we have 29 children in our orphanage. We are sustained through donations of individuals, churches, the business community and other non-profit organizations like ourselves. Donations of money, food , household items, tools, appliances etc are welcome at all times. We enjoy the recognition and respect of the president and government of Guyana. The ministry of Human Services and Social Security maintains a healthy relationship with the management and staff. Two years ago we established a branch home for children affected by HIV . To date we care for three girls and two boys there.
