Joshua (age 8) and Tireece (age 10) came to us August, 2012. His mother was referred to us by the Social Services/Child Protection Agency in New Amsterdam. She was weeping bitterly because she did not have a clue as to where she would spend the night or where her faith would lead her in terms of us believing her story. She was evicted by her landlord and had already spent days and nights under a house in her neighbourhood. She was very afraid and nervous not knowing what night fall would bring her. Prior to her visit to ACH we learned from folks in the area of the difficulties she and her boys had been encountering for months, such as the many days of starvation and the abuse the boys had suffered due to her overwhelming frustration.
The management and staff considered deeply the plight this young mother found herself in: five sons, all with father who showed absolutely no responsibility toward them. We certainly could not turn them away, but neither could we take them all in. Tireece and Joshua are with us. It is our prayer that the other boys receive the care and security they deserve.
